About the Position:

As a key member of The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation's education team, the director will manage and support grant-making for the foundation, focusing on preparing students for the future of work by providing under-served students with access to high quality out-of-school enrichment and workforce development programs. In addition, this person will be part of a dedicated, mission-driven and proactive team that is committed to creating an overall grant portfolio that is nimble and responsive to the evolving needs of our community.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Grant Sourcing and Pipeline Development:

  • Serve as a foundation liaison for leaders of out-of-school enrichment and workforce development organizations, as well as other leaders of influential learning institutions
  • Identify nonprofit organizations and initiatives aligned with the foundation's grant-making priorities
  • Seek and evaluate new grant opportunities based on the foundation's priorities, including analyzing business plans, programs and budgets

Active Management of Grant Investment Portfolio:

  • Analyze proposals, design programs and help develop and approve budgets
  • Work with foundation program team to prepare grant investment proposals for approval
  • Develop strong partnerships with grantees and assist them with strategic counsel and program implementation when needed

Grant Evaluation and Due Diligence:

  • Develop grant metrics in partnership with grantee to evaluate impact
  • Assess and refine investment hypothesis based on grant outcomes
  • Provide insightful grantee investment analysis based on the latest data and research available

Foundation Strategy, Leadership and Special Projects:

  • Develop and present strategy and grantee investment recommendations to foundation's leadership team and the foundation's board of governors
  • Help drive sector forward by sharing analyses, knowledge, experiences and lessons learned
  • Oversee special projects and initiatives with outside stakeholders
  • Maintain knowledge of current challenges, issues and trends relevant to achieving the foundation's mission
  • Represent the foundation at relevant public events, conferences and meetings

Candidate Requirements:

  • A minimum of ten years of professional work experience in an education-related context required, with a demonstrated track record in team/project leadership, grant portfolio management, and strategic planning
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; advanced degree preferred
  • Exceptional analytical capabilities with the capacity to understand complex organizations and operating environments
  • Deep grasp of key policy issues related to out-of-school enrichment and/or the future of work
  • Ability to work effectively with a range of senior executives across a diverse spectrum of grantees and focus areas
  • Energy and perseverance necessary to find opportunities for high-leverage investments and the judgment and organizational savvy required to assess their probability of success
  • Ability to create and bring initiatives to scale
  • Experience working in an entrepreneurial and/or fast-paced environment
  • Superb written and presentation skills
  • The presence and communication skills to represent the foundation in diverse forums and organizational relationships
  • Demonstrated personal commitment to the cause of improving learning opportunities for students, with a focus on equity and excellence
  • Expert competency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Knowledge of Salesforce database systems is a plus
  • Spanish fluency preferred
