About the position:

The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation is looking for a Managing Director, Education to develop, execute and communicate initiatives supporting the Foundation's commitment to public K-12 education in Los Angeles.

The Managing Director's responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Provide guidance for the Foundation's grant-making activities in education and accountability for its work by adjusting programs and strategies based on evaluation
  • Develop and own critical grantee and partner relationships as the foundation moves in a new direction with its education portfolio.
  • Actively engage with education thought leaders and the broader L.A. community to collaborate and advance meaningful, impactful and sustainable systemic change in public education in Los Angeles
  • Identify and explore opportunities for high-leverage investments; use sound judgment and organizational savvy to assess their probability of success
  • Collaborate with team to devise workable scenarios for bringing new and existing initiatives to scale
  • Enhance the profile of the Foundation by serving as a spokesperson for K-12 public education, and communicate the Foundation's work in a clear and inspirational manner to help further establish deep relationships with industry partners, media and other donors
  • Attract, develop and retain high-performing employees, and foster a productive, self-motivated, inclusive, team-oriented culture that empowers the work of the entire organization and in which communication is an important and abiding value
  • Play an essential leadership role in building and carrying the culture and values of the Foundation including humility, integrity, curiosity, respect, creativity and courage

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum 7 years of successful management experience
  • Experience collaborating in a complex organization as part of the management team
  • Ability to succinctly and thoughtfully present and respond to board members
  • Fluency in public K-12 education, at district, school and out-of-school levels
  • Ability to use quantitative and qualitative data to present options for decision-making
  • Ability to juggle multiple competing demands and set priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining superb attention to detail
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills including strong written and oral verbal communication and ability to positively engage with individuals with a range of backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to build authentic partnerships, to collaborate and to work with efficiency and diplomacy across lines of difference and among diverse stakeholder groups
  • Demonstrated ability to work both autonomously and as part of a diverse team, always with flexibility, enthusiasm and determination
  • Spanish fluency a plus

In addition, the candidate must be:

  • Deeply committed to the Foundation's mission of expanding learning opportunities for K-12 public school students
  • A tenacious and skillful facilitator and problem solver, with the ability to anticipate issues before they arise and prioritize them appropriately once they do
  • A good listener who can be both empathetic and pragmatic
  • Organized and capable of functioning in a dynamic environment with a can-do attitude
  • A trusted colleague with good instincts and strong personal and intellectual integrity
